The Emily Bailes Fund is named after Emily Bailes, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of five and lost her battle with the disease in March 2008, aged 9.
Emily’s family set up The Emily Bailes Fund to raise money for the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group, (CCLG) on July 4, 2008 – which would have been Emily’s 10th birthday.
The fund has raised more than £370,000 for CCLG, including funds raised at ‘Emily’s Big Walk’, a major national event that took place in 2012.
In 2016, Emily would have been celebrating her 18th birthday. In celebration of her memory her family organised 18 events for Emily, including the 'hangover run' (or walk!) which saw around 100 friends and family, runners and walkers, young and old attending. Several people also completed the London Marathon as part of the 18 events that took place.
The 18 for Emily Charity Ball also took place in the same year at Epsom Downs Racecourse, and was a huge success. The Ball raised over £25,000 on the night itself, all of which went toward vital research projects at CCLG, ensuring a brighter future for all children diagnosed with cancer.
Emily would have turned 26 this year in 2024, and her family are celebrating a wedding, welcoming donations in lieu of presents.
Emily's fund is a 'general fund' which supports a variety of research projects, as well as a number of CCLG publications for patients and families.
