After a year of normality, Hayley's condition sadly deteriorated and she passed away. After both Hayley and her sister suffered from neuroblastoma, Hayley's family is determined to help find if there is a genetic link for neuroblastoma. They have been tirelessly raising funds for CCLG ever since, for research into neuroblastoma, genetic predisposition to developing neuroblastoma, and secondary myelodysplastic syndrome. Here, her family share her story...
Hayley was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in September 2015.
She went through 2 years of gruelling treatment including chemotherapy, surgery, high dose chemotherapy and stem-cell transplant, radiotherapy and immunotherapy and reached a point where her disease was stable. Life went back to relative normality and we managed to create some wonderful, happy memories for almost a year.
However, early in 2018, Hayley was found to have developed secondary myelodysplastic syndrome due to the neuroblastoma treatment she had been through. Her consultants were looking into the possibility of Hayley having a bone marrow transplant to treat this when sadly it became apparent that the neuroblastoma had returned in Hayley's bone marrow.
Due to Hayley suffering two active malignancies, there were sadly no further options available to her.
Hayley's sister, Jessica had also suffered from neuroblastoma (stage 4s) as a baby and while numerous tests were done to determine why both children suffered from neuroblastoma, no definitive link has been found as yet.
The Hayley Bendall Fund with CCLG has been set up to help fund research into the following areas: neuroblastoma; genetic predisposition to developing neuroblastoma; and secondary myelodysplastic syndrome, in the hopes that no other family will have to go through the heartache we now live with.
